Creekside Cottage Retreat Point Reyes

There’s a garden covered in flowers right below the house, but there’s also a stream that cuts through the property. While dipping my toes in it, I saw a couple of deer doing the same thing not 15 feet away from me. I loved watching the fog roll in from our private patio and my mother enjoyed reading in the sunshine for a couple hours while I went exploring the property.

This tavern oozes this special feeling that I can only describe as a combo between vintage glam, contemporary and a touch of dark academia. The staff is friendly, and had a place to safely lock our touring bicycles. The restaurant next door, which seems to be affiliated with the hotel, looks like a bar, but has surprisingly good food. Where to See Life-Size Gingerbread Houses in Los Angeles

ginger house

“Part of it was, I love architecturally beautiful houses,” Figueroa explains. “Being able to create little minis makes it a lot more accessible.” Which is why, when the opportunity to recreate an Eames house while working as an assistant archivist for Herman Miller presented itself, it was a natural choice to say yes. Midcentury-modern architecture at its sweetest, a gingerbread house by Mary Figueroa.

Mytheresa and Flamingo Estate Open a Holiday House Made of Gingerbread

Though the base of this Crumble Castle stays pretty simple—with mostly white icing detailing—it has colored meringues on the top of its towers to make for a colorful and playful recreation of tower spires. “Go big or go home” might as well be the motto of Asbjørg Nesje, whose family gingerbread house-making tradition is grand, to say the least. The construction is similar to building an actual house from scratch. Having access to floor and building plans to get your measurements just right is of the greatest importance, along with ensuring that everything is reinforced.

Where to See Life-Size Gingerbread Houses in Los Angeles

Whether you’re looking for something to base your next gingerbread house on or just need some inspo for this year’s construction, peruse these 20 gingerbread house ideas as you build out your own sugar fantasy this holiday season. As with any DIY project, creating a gingerbread house takes some serious planning. You’ll likely need to do some sketches and crunch some numbers before the baking stage begins. This craft is not one to do hastily, cookie masonry will definitely take up a few hours, but the eye-catching results will pay off in the end, even if you have a mini mental breakdown halfway through the construction. In 1812 Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published one of their most famous stories. Hansel and Gretel are left to stave in the woods by their cruel mother as their woodcutter father is unable to provide for the family.

Did you know that you don’t have to stick with regular gingerbread dough when making a gingerbread house? Other doughs can provide a different color or tone to your house, like this cardamom cookie dough that food stylist and recipe developer Judy Kim made for Epicurious in 2020. “The cookie provides a bright background for the decor, which skips the classic candy overload, and focuses instead on cool-toned shimmer and shine,” Kim told Epicurious.

Look to lace for gingerbread house ideas that will stand out from the rest. Gingerbread houses are about combining imaginary with reality by recreating real life items in whimsical ways using something sweet. Sometimes giving a gingerbread house a paint job doesn’t mean pulling out the icing or making a whole new kind of cookie dough. Rather, all it takes is some candies or, for Boake and her pink Victorian house, pink strawberry Pocky snacks that she found at an Asian mall to create rosy wood slating. Each year, the Museum of Architecture in London hosts a Gingerbread City featuring a menagerie of architectural confections full of inspiration for your next gingerbread house.

This house, which came in at 39,202 cubic feet, broke the previous record held by the Mall of America in Minnesota. As hotels and malls have worked to outshine their rivals in gingerbread house construction, some houses have gotten larger and larger to the point where the average adult can comfortably stroll inside. Contained within you’ll find no evil witches, just delicious, seasonal cheer. And you don’t have wander through the woods of Germany to find life-size gingerbread creations.

How to make a gingerbread house

This waffle gingerbread house is from a Target ad and isn't even gingerbread but seriously! “It’s so much easier than doing the whole ‘make your own melted sugar,’” Boake adds. Piping white sugar icing is a simple and inexpensive way to decorate.

Behind the fireplace is a living room dominated by a lounge chair, coffee table and flowery print couch made of gingerbread that you can look at but can’t sit on. For curved pieces of gingerbread, he takes them fresh out of the oven while still warm and places them onto the curved pieces of foam core so they dry curved! Have extra gingerbread dough you want to make use of (or don’t want to eat)?

In fact there are a few you can check out right here in Southern California. This pattern makes a house that isn't too big so you don't waste a ton of candy decorating it but big enough that you can put some lights inside and make a pretty decoration for your mantle for the holidays. All you need is a pattern, some strong royal icing, candy and your imagination! Learn to make my simple gingerbread house recipe with complete guide to the perfect gingerbread house on the first try. You can even learn how to make some beautiful stained glass windows out of candy.

The children search for home and come upon a house built cakes, candy and gingerbread. The proprietor turns out to be an evil witch who lures them inside with the intention of eating them. Ultimately the children trick the witch, trap her in the oven she’d warmed for them, make off with her fortune, and return to their loving father.

A bit of sanding might even be necessary to get your edges as precise as possible, Nesje suggests, especially when it comes to this recreation of the Norwegian Parliament building. Even if you’re a gingerbread house-making novice and feel more comfortable with a precut kit, this midcentury-modern house from World Market is simple to put together. Build off the modern structure and have fun with abstract stones made with multicolored candies. An Epicurious gingerbread house by Judy Kim that the Brady Bunch would love. Before Mary Figueroa started working as a curator of history at the Indiana State Museum, she made gingerbread houses competitively throughout high school.

LOS ANGELES — A gingerbread house in California has received several offers after being listed on Zillow for a mere $1.9 million. This off-the-wall idea to create a real gingerbread house started last summer when the forces behind Mytheresa and Flamingo Estate collaborated to open a temporary Summer Body Shop inside an auto body shop in East Hampton, N.Y. Call this December-delightful outing a lovely complement to any storybook house tours you've taken around town (yes, storybook or witch houses are something rather different than the gingerbread house, though the fanciful forms have plenty in common, spirit-wise). But you'd need a truckload of candy to deck these adorable abodes, for several of LA's gingerbread houses stand at two stories or more. Outside of L.A., there’s also a life-size gingerbread houses in Madison Square Park in Manhattan, while Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco boasts the largest in the state with their two-story house, complete with a dining room that seats up to 12 guests. The record for the largest gingerbread house, however, was set in 2013 in Bryan, Texas, where it seems like I’ve heard everything is bigger.

Make a star cookie or other extra shapes to affix to the top of your house in lieu of a chimney. Mix together an egg, superfine sugar, and corn syrup along with flour and baking powder. Add in a leaf green gel color, then microwave it in a shallow dish for 90 to 120 seconds. Keep the dish upside down on a wire rack and, once cooled, put it between two pieces of parchment paper and press down. We are committed to serving the community with good food and great service.

In fact there are a few you can check out right here in Southern California. This pattern makes a house that isn't too big so you don't waste a ton of candy decorating it but big enough that you can put some lights inside and make a pretty decoration for your mantle for the holidays. You can even learn how to make some beautiful stained glass windows out of candy.

Ginger House

This waffle gingerbread house is from a Target ad and isn't even gingerbread but seriously! “It’s so much easier than doing the whole ‘make your own melted sugar,’” Boake adds. Piping white sugar icing is a simple and inexpensive way to decorate.

Can you eat a gingerbread house?

Deadly 'rogue wave' smashes into cruise ship near Antarctica but where did it come from?

rogue waves cruise ships

That doesn’t mean that a rogue wave would leave a cruise ship completely untouched. There’s likely going to be some damage, depending on the height of the wave. But, she wouldn’t flip, and passengers would be generally safe, most of the time.

Has a Rogue Wave Ever Hit a Cruise Ship? (Can it Survive?)

State Department spokesperson confirmed the death and offered condolences to the family. Neither the Viking statement nor the Argentine Naval Prefecture identified the woman or her hometown. Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville. The Viking Polaris’ next departure, the Antarctic Explorer cruise scheduled for Dec. 5-17, was canceled due to the incident. Streets around harbors flooded overnight in some Dutch North Sea towns including Scheveningen, the seaside suburb of The Hague. Tom Trusdale said he saw two passengers tossed into the air from what seemed to be an apparent explosion.

He covers a wide range of topics including space exploration, planetary science, space weather, climate change, animal behavior, evolution and paleontology. His feature on the upcoming solar maximum was shortlisted in the "top scoop" category at the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Awards for Excellence in 2023. The four other guests had non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment from doctors and medical staff onboard. "An Esvagt ship is towing it slowly towards Bremerhafen in Germany at around 8-9 knots," the spokesperson told Reuters. Danish Search and Rescue said the vessel could "maneuver via emergency systems, and it has two civilian support vessels close by."

This also highlights that rogue waves don’t just pose a risk at sea but on any open body of water. In September of 1995, the Cunard line Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner was hit by an estimated 92 to 96-foot high rogue wave caused by Hurricane Luis while crossing North Atlantic Ocean. Beating that was when a fishing boat was hit in 1991, and a series of buoys in the area recorded a rogue wave at 100.7 feet. The rogue way that hit Queen Elizabeth 2 was estimated to be up to 96ft in height, possibly the largest rogue wave ever witnessed. A rogue wave is a rare extra-large wave appearing on the ocean surface without warning.

In 2005, Norwegian Dawn was hit by a rogue wave estimated to be 70 feet tall, flooding a number of cabins. In 1995 Queen Elizabeth 2 encountered a rogue wave estimated to be 95 feet tall. And many a ship is thought to have been sunk by rogue waves, including the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank during a storm on Lake Superior in 1975; all 29 crew perished. A U.S. woman died and four other passengers were injured when a massive wave smashed into an Antarctic cruise ship during a storm as it sailed off the southernmost tip of South America, officials said Friday. The 62-year-old woman was hit by broken glass when the wave broke cabin windows late Tuesday, Argentine authorities said. It is currently unclear if the wave that hit the Viking Polaris qualifies as an official rogue wave because there is no accurate data on the wave height or the surrounding sea state.

Across the fleet, there are thorough operational protocols in place and we always prioritize the safety of those onboard,” HX said. The ship, traveling under its own power, is currently sailing to Bremerhaven, Germany, for disembarkation, HX said in an updated statement Friday. Two civilian support vessels are aiding the ship in its journey to port, Danish rescue authorities said.

"We are offering all appropriate consular assistance. Out of respect for the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment," the spokesperson said. The passenger killed was a U.S. citizen, a State Department spokesperson confirmed to ABC News Friday. The Bremen was adrift for 2 hours with no propulsion, while the Caledonian Star had to be tugged by the Argentinian Navy at the Argentine port of Ushuaia. The weight of the water would also cause the ship’s hull to buckle and possibly break apart.

What would happen if a 40-foot wave hit a cruise ship?

An answer is that it would not do any harm to ships at sea, regardless of size. Generally, a Massive Cruise ship is considered at risk if struck from the side by a 40ft wave. The nightmare almost guaranteed flip would probably be something like “the three sisters” the Three sisters was a name given to a set of three 56ft rogue waves that were spotted in lake superior in 1975. Our answer is that while rogue waves were once thought to be sailors tales, like the Kraken they’ve turned out to be very much based in reality. A wave of 20 meters (65 feet) taken on the beam will roll most ships, oil rig sensors in the North Sea have measured waves bigger than that.

rogue waves cruise ships

Rogue wave events are relatively rare given the size of the oceans combined, and when they do happen often, there are no ships within the vicinity, let alone a cruise ship. There are typically over 310 cruise ships sailing at any given time, with an estimated 25 million people taking a cruise each year. Albeit the real danger of rogue waves is that they are such sudden and unpredictable events that can appear without warning, there is only so much action a crew can take to avoid them. In 2001 Bahamian-registered cruise ships  MS Bremen and MS Caledonian Star were both caught in a rogue wave in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Another of the recent incidents involving a cruise ship being hit by a rogue wave was the case of the Viking Polaris in December 2022. A US woman was killed, and four other guests were injured when a rogue wave struck the ship when it was sailing towards Ushuaia on an Antarctic cruise. The ship, operated by HX, a cruise company owned by Norway's Hurtigruten Group, was about 120 miles from Denmark's west coast when the wave struck, Reuters reported. The wave's force shattered some of the ship's windows and caused it to tilt "pretty violently," passenger Elizabeth Lawrence told Business Insider. So while rogue waves are a dangerous and unpredictable force of nature that does threaten cruise ships, they don't need to be at the forefront of your mind when booking a voyage. While no cruise ships have been sunk by rogue waves, other types of ships have.

Rogue waves are freak waves that are at least twice as high as the surrounding sea state — the average height of the waves for a given area at a given time, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The massive walls of water come from seemingly out of nowhere and without warning. In modern oceanography, rogue waves are defined not as the biggest possible waves at sea, but instead as extreme sized waves for a given sea state. An American passenger on an Antarctic cruise died and four other guests were injured after their Viking ship was struck by a "rogue wave," officials said. A possible rogue wave sent headlines around the world last week after it broke windows on a cruise ship off the coast of Argentina, killing a woman and injuring four others.

6 mistakes to avoid while planning a cruise and sharing a cabin with a friend

The best part of relying on the cruise ship phones to reach someone else onboard is it's totally free. Utilizing Royal Caribbean's in-room phones and phones in common areas is a simple way to communicate with guests onboard your ship and onshore. Royal Caribbean cruise ships range in a guest capacity of about 2,000 to 6,500, so finding one person onboard is not always a simple task.

It's quite clear his (public) email is monitored by a team of employees, so you probably aren't reaching Mr. Bayley. It's a benefit you receive as a loyal cruiser, so you may as well take advantage of it before trying the main phone numbers.

Now you can plan ahead and reserve shore excursions, book specialty dining, schedule spa treatments and more on your tablet or computer from the comfort of your home. Choosing your destination carefully is also a travel tip that can help your vacation feel more relaxing. Picking an itinerary with more chill time and less sightseeing makes a big difference. In turn, booking a European cruise — with plenty of sightseeing and historical sites to explore — might make you feel accomplished but not any more refreshed than when you left home. You can also use the days of your cruise as an opportunity to enhance daily routines you need to stay focused and healthy at home.

Work with your travel agent

They may not directly address your concern, but often they inform whom to contact. If your question is fairly rudimentary, they can also answer questions for you. Picking up the phone to contact Royal Caribbean customer service is probably the most obvious method, but it has its pros and cons. At the end of the day, enjoying a vacation without taking time off is not as insurmountable a challenge as it may seem, particularly if you can strike a balance between relaxation and productivity. Again, there's also the possibility of leveraging flexible work arrangements in order to convince your boss to agree to one of your proposals.

Make A Short Trip Feel Long

Everything on the Cruise Planner can be canceled up to 48 hours before your cruise begins. Therefore, if you purchase a shore excursion for $200 and later see the price has dropped to $150, you can cancel and rebook the excursion with no penalty. If you plan to purchase professional photos taken by Royal Caribbean’s photographers, a photo package will offer a better deal than purchasing each picture individually. If you’re interested in purchasing a backstage tour of your cruise ship, visit the Onboard Activities tab on the Cruise Planner. The Shore Excursions tab is where you can browse and purchase tours for your upcoming cruise vacation. Royal Caribbean’s arcades come at an additional cost, and you can purchase credits while onboard or beforehand in the Cruise Planner.

If you need an excuse, bring along a book to read, or plan a quick phone call. And we live in a time where most people have multiple electronic devices to charge, from phones to laptops to cameras. Having an open, honest conversation before even booking the cruise is the best way to meet in the middle on money. The number is for family members to call us just in case there is an extreme emergency. We will check our phones if there is free WiFi while in ports, but thought this would be helpful.

Knowing the ins and outs of the Cruise Planner can not only help you find the best add-ons for your cruise vacation, but save you money along the way. Most major cell phone carriers these days provide a means of making phone calls via an internet connection instead of relying on a cell phone connection. The best option for most people is to purchase a Royal Caribbean Voom internet package. Calls made from your Royal Caribbean ship to somewhere on land (ship to shore) can be made from your stateroom phone and also costs $7.95 per minute, billed to your SeaPass account. The problem has continued for the following days, and our readers are still reaching out to inquire about the problem as of the posting of this article. Relive the memories from your vacation with professional photos of your favorite moments onboard.

Of course, for this option to work, everyone who you need to stay in contact with needs to purchase a Voom package and have their phone or tablet with them. Once connected to the ship's internet, you can leverage any number of messaging apps to communicate with someone else onboard, or even at home. Using your cell phone's data plan can be prohibitively expensive, with costs of $1 per MB or more. You are better off skipping this option and looking at Voom options (scroll down to see more about this). You could use your phone like normal and place calls and text messages by connecting to the cell provider on the Royal Caribbean ship, but this comes with a heft roaming cost. Almost everyone has a cell phone with them and your cell phone will function while on a cruise, although the cost of doing so will vary greatly.

Some jobs might even allow you to shift your hours when you're traveling, getting up early or working late in order to take advantage of time in cruise ports with your family or friends. This can be especially beneficial when you're working around school vacations and taking your own job requirements into consideration. I hadn't seen any OBC added so I called tonight and they added it manually.

Acessing your Royal Caribbean account provides access to cruises you have booked, where you can manage an upcoming sailing. This includes being able to make payments, book shore excursions and other add-ons. Your catch-all place to get questions answered is by contacting Royal Caribbean directly for reservation updates, status questions, and other customer service inquiries. Plus, travel agents have resources guests do not, including more leeway with certain policies. Sometimes there's barely a wait, while other times hold times can be over an hour.

There are many cruises (especially to the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Coast of Mexico) that last three or four days. Whether over a holiday weekend, such as Memorial Day or Labor Day, or because of a "summer Friday," this can be plenty of time to get away. On a cruise, you’ll often travel with at least one other person, and come into contact with many other guests, bartenders, waiters, and tour guides. Royal Caribbean does not allow guests to share a drink package between multiple adults. The Royal Caribbean drink packages aren’t for everyone, so be sure that you discuss them beforehand with your cabin mate.

It's very common for people booked on a cruise to have an issue they want to raise with Royal Caribbean. Whether it's something simple like re-pricing a drink package, or altering the reservation, there seems to be a lot questions about where to turn first. Even if you only end up having a few days at sea, that's plenty of time to find amazing adventures. This is a relatively easy question when referring to a job, but not always when you need to factor in children's school schedules. It usually makes sense to first plan trips around school holidays before you try to schedule your own time off from work. Some schools have stricter absence policies than others, so you'll want to check the regulations before you book flights and a sailing.

WiFi calling has no additional cost and works just like you are at home and supports voice calls, text messaging (SMS and MMS). It works with most newer devices, including iPhone 5C and later, Android and Blackberry devices. If you get an internet package, another option is WiFi calling through your carrier. Reserve online before you cruise and enjoy the first day of your vacation. Only one cruise line offers the thrilling opportunity to learn to surf, to feel the rush of skydiving right on the deck of the ship with Ripcord by iFly or to go on a behind-the-scenes ship tour. Reserve your table at any of our specialty restaurants, from our signature steakhouse Chops Grille to the imaginative curiosities of Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine.
